Despite picking up Independents, Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, is failing to turn the tide of Republicans in the red state of Texas, which is sticking with incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

Cruz is holding a 6 point lead among likely voters 51-45 percent, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.

"The major Senate candidates were trying to mobilize their partisans – without a lot of attempt to get voters to cross over – and it looks like they’ve done that," Texas Politics Project's Jim Henson told the Tribune. "If you look for Republican defections to Beto O'Rourke, they're not there. But the Independents break to the Democrat instead of the Republican in that race."

O'Rourke pulled 51 percent of the Independent voters in the poll, trumping Cruz's 39 percent, but it was not enough to get him over the top thus far.

"For every other race, the Independents are in the Republican column," Texas Politics Project polling and research manager Josh Blank told Texas Tribune. "Also, the other Democrats in the poll do not have the same level of support from Democratic voters that O'Rourke has."

Other key Republicans in the state are far more ahead in their races, leading by double digits, according to the poll.

  • GOP Gov. Greg Abbott leads by 19 points 56-37 percent.
  • GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick leads by 18 points 53-35.
  • GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton leads by 12 points 48-36.

The major polls on the Texas Senate race have Sen. Cruz leading from 5 to 10 percentage points, according to RealClear Politics.

The University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll surveyed 927 likely voters with a margin of error of plus or minis 3.22 percentage points.
