New York businesses are leaving over high taxes, Sen. Rick Scott said Thursday, and he wants to welcome them to Florida.
"I want all the jobs," the Florida Republican and former governor told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," when asked about Amazon's decision to pull out of New York City. "In my eight years, we added 1.7 million jobs. The tax structure up here doesn't make any sense, what New York has done, what Connecticut has done."
He said he sends thank you notes to people like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, because when taxes rise, people move.
"Even his mom moved because she said she can't afford the taxes up here," said Scott. "Companies are competing globally. Who is going to pay them more because they pay higher taxes?"
Meanwhile, New Yorkers are no longer able to write off their state and local taxes, and Scott said he agrees with that move.
"Why should Florida taxpayers or Tennessee taxpayers subsidize New York's high taxes?" Scott said. "We subsidize the fact that New York wants to charge their citizens more taxes. That's not fair. Federal taxes ought to go for federal issues."
Scott said in the Senate, he and other Republicans are working on reducing the hours for President Donald Trump's nominees down to two hours from 30.
"What we are doing now is confirming judges," he said. "Every 30 hours, you can't do anything else. So that's what we are doing all the time because the Democrats have decided just to shut everything down...We don't have ambassadors all over the world confirmed, including Iraq. It makes no sense."
