Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said Friday that there was "reason for skepticism" over North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meeting with President Donald Trump.

"Diplomacy is always a positive, certainly far better than war, or preemptive strikes, or threats of war and fire and fury and bullying, but there is a lot of reason for skepticism," Blumenthal said Friday on CNN's "New Day."

Blumenthal said that North Korea has not shown that it is willing to reduce its nuclear arsenal.

"There is no sign that we've seen that North Korea is going to simply walk away from its nuclear program or abandon its missiles and nuclear warheads.

"So we need to reduce the risk of going to these talks, which seem to validate the totalitarian regime," Blumenthal said.

Key actions the U.S. must take are to ramp up economic sanctions and verify that North Korea is suspending its nuclear program during any talks, Blumenthal said.

Trump tweeted Thursday that a meeting was being planned. "Great progress being made," Trump wrote in the tweet.
