Comedian Jerry Seinfeld thinks Roseanne Barr's show would have died on its own, and ABC went overboard in firing her.

"I don't even know why they had to do that," Seinfeld told USA Today on Monday. "It seemed like, you don't need to murder someone that's committing suicide. I thought the firing was overkill. She's already dead."

Seinfeld was promoting Netflix's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," in New York when he made the comments.

ABC in late May canceled "Roseanne" after Barr made a racially charged joke about Valerie Jarrett, a former senior adviser in the Obama White House, on Twitter. The actress deleted the comment and apologized for her joke, but ABC said it was too late.

Barr's deleted tweet read: "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj"

"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," ABC said in statement.

On a potential TV revival of his own popular show, Seinfeld told USA Today no way.

"I don't love that trend," he says. "I'm not a fan of going back. I like to go forward. Make up something new. I don't like retreads, I don't like sequels, I don't like Throwback Thursday. I like to look at old pictures, but other than that, let's move on."
