The Secret Service has spent a little over $35,000 on golf cart rentals for President Donald Trump's visits to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, since his inauguration, CBS News reported Friday.
The news outlet said its review of purchase orders showed $35,185 in costs for renting golf carts during Trump's visits to Palm Beach, Fla.
Another purchase order showed a charge of $64,000 for "elevator services-Trump Tower" in December 2016, CBS News reported.
The purchase orders were among those reviewed by CBS News – including Secret Service costs for Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Jr., who have traveled overseas on Trump Organization business, that've topped $190,000 since January.
"The Trump family’s frequent travel to international destinations purely to promote the Trump family business is burning through taxpayer dollars at an unprecedented rate and stretching the Secret Service increasingly thin," Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told CBS News.
The costs of Trump's trips have come under scrutiny before, with estimates showing he's already racked up a travel bill of more than $20 million — nearly the amount President Barack Obama spent on travel in his first two years. Obama spent approximately $97 million on travel, averaging $12.12 million per year in office.
The Government Accountability Office has begun work on a report that will look at the cost to taxpayers of travel by Trump's family, CBS News reported.
