Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer was interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller's team Monday as part of the investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election, according to a report in Politico.

Spicer, a top aide at the Republican National Committee during the campaign who became Trump's press secretary after the election, resigned in July. Investigators asked him about the surprise firing of James Comey as FBI director and about President Donald Trump's meetings with Russian officials, particularly his sit-down with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Reince Priebus, Trump's former White House chief of staff, was interviewed by Mueller's team last week.

Other former and current White House staffers expected to speak with Mueller's team include White House counsel Don McGahn and communications director Hope Hicks.

Spicer declined to comment on the meeting and his attorney, Christopher Mead, did not respond to phone calls or emails from Politico.

Monday's meeting shows that Mueller is beginning to ramp up interviews with current and former Trump administration officials.
