Actor Sean Penn is reportedly in Istanbul to film a documentary on the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkish media is reporting.
The Turkish news agency Anadolu reportedly showed a photo of Penn outside Saudi Arabia’s consulate where Khashoggi was murdered. He was also said to be seen outside the consul-general’s residence.
Details of his visit came in a report by AFP posted on Yahoo News.
The pro-government daily Sabah said Penn had hoped to meet Khashoggi’s Turkish fiancée Hatice Cengiz.
Penn has been criticized for his documentary work in the past.
He faced a backlash over his interview with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, when the kingpin was wanted in the United States and Mexico. He also traveled to Baghdad in 2002 to meet with senior Iraqi officials in the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
