Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity responded to a slam by "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart on Tuesday, saying Stewart "has his head so far up Obama's a-- he cannot see clearly."

Stewart started the verbal jousting in a Rolling Stone interview posted on Tuesday in which he blasted Fox News, adding that Hannity is "probably the most loathsome dude" at Fox.

"Everything is presented in as devious a manner as it could possibly be presented," Stewart said.

Hannity responded in an email to Politico's Dylan Byers, saying Stewart should stick to reading the jokes written by his staff.

"Nearly 50 million Americans on food stamps, nearly 50 million in poverty, the lowest labor participation rate since 1978, and Jon's beloved president who once said George Bush's debt was 'irresponsible and unpatriotic' has almost accumulated more debt than every other president before him combined," Hannity told Politico.

"Do I even need to remind him about keeping our doctors, our health plans, and saving money? And how is that healthcare website working out? Or Iraq, ISIS, the 'Russian reset'?"

Hannity went on to say, "Jon's problem is he has his head so far up Obama's a-- he cannot see clearly. He is obviously better suited to reading his joke writers' material and making his clapping seal audience happy. I await another Rally to Restore Sanity with Fatwah supporter Cat Stevens!"

That last line was a reference to the singer, currently known as Yusuf Islam, who performed at Stewart's Washington rally in 2010. Yusuf Islam said in the late 1980s that he supported the fatwa against author Salman Rushdie, but after being criticized said he had made a bad joke.

Stewart earlier this year said he had been unaware of Yusuf Islam's statements, but a Weekly Standard article shortly after the event quoted Rushdie as telling Stewart he opposed having Yusuf Islam onstage.

"I spoke to Jon Stewart about Yusuf Islam's appearance. He said he was sorry it upset me, but really, it was plain that he was fine with it," Rushdie said.
