White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on nearly broke down Wednesday as she responded to a question from a 13-year-old boy on what the Trump administration was doing to keep schools safe amid the recent spate of fatal shootings.

"Hopefully, these aren't as tough as the 'Bring Your Kids to Work Day' questions," Sanders said as she called on the boy, later identified as Benje Choucroun, a reporter for Time for Kids.

He was the guest of a reporter in the White House press pool.

"At our school, recently we had a lockdown," Choucroun began. "One thing that affects my and other students' mental health is the worry by me and all of our friends about getting shot at school.

"Can you tell me what the administration has done and will do to prevent these senseless tragedies?" he asked.

"As a kid, and certainly as a parent, there is nothing that can be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe," Sanders said, her voice cracking as she appears to be nearing tears.

"So, I'm sorry that you feel that way," she continued, breaking her emotions with a smile.

"This administration takes it seriously — and the School Safety Commission that the president convened is meeting this week in an official meeting to discuss the best ways forward and how we can do every single thing within our power to protect kids in our schools and to make them feel safe and make their parents feel good about dropping them off."

Trump is scheduled to visit victims' families and survivors of the Santa Fe High School massacre in Texas on Thursday. Ten people, including eight children, were killed and 13 others were wounded in the May 18 attack.

Sanders, 35, the mother of three young children, is the daughter of former Arkansas Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee.
