Schoen to Newsmax: Expect Political 'Right' to Block Immigration Reform

By    |   Thursday, 27 June 2013 10:25 PM EDT

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen tells Newsmax that the political "right" is likely to block an immigration reform measure from being passed in the House of Representatives.

When asked about the prospects of the House passing an immigration reform bill, Schoen, in an exclusive interview Thursday, said, "Don't believe so. The right will block it, I predict."

Earlier in the day, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a sweeping immigration reform bill proposed by the bipartisan Gang of Eight senators, which includes Florida Republican Marco Rubio.

With upper chamber approval by a vote of 68 to 32, the legislation now heads to the House of Representatives, where political analysts like Schoen say it will face an uphill climb amid border security and amnesty concerns for the 11 million-plus illegal immigrants thought to be living in the United States.

The "big question now is whether the Republican-controlled House will scuttle the bill as they did the farm bill," insisted Schoen.

A Senate battle over the measure, which began on June 7, ended with $46 billion in new funding to increase border security by doubling the number of border patrol agents, building 700 miles of new border fencing, and revamping the U.S. visa system.

Schoen believes the political winners from the Senate debate will be "centrists, supporters of bipartisanship, and those who want and expect government to work."

The political losers, he said, will be the extremists in either party.

"Losers are those on the extremes who oppose rational compromise for the greater good," Schoen said.
