The family of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise said Sunday this Father’s Day has a special meaning one day after Scalise underwent a third surgery after being shot last Wednesday by a man who was reportedly distraught over President Donald Trump’s election.

"Steve's greatest joy is being a father to Madison and Harrison, and a husband to Jennifer," a tweet from his account reads.

"This Father's Day has special meaning for the Scalise family, and they send their best wishes to every family, especially the dads. Take the time to be close with the ones you love. Thank you for the continued prayers, support and outpouring of love.”

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership, was shot in the hip and his condition was upgraded to serious on Saturday.

The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, died in a shootout with police. He opened fire at the Republican congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Va., after asking another lawmaker whether the team practicing was a group of Republicans or Democrats.
