Lindsey Graham on SC Police Shooting Video: 'Deeply Troubling'

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Wednesday described the video showing a white South Carolina police officer fatally shooting an unarmed African-American man after a routine traffic stop Saturday as "horrific" and "very difficult to watch and deeply troubling on many fronts."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Walter Scott," said Graham, a Republican who has represented the state in Congress since 2003.

Scott, 50, died after now-former North Charleston Patrolman Michael Slager fired eight times as he was running away.

Slager, 33, who had been on the force for six years, was fired Wednesday and charged with murder in Scott's death. He had stopped Scott for a broken brake light on his car.

The former officer had said that he fired at Scott's back because Scott tried to take his Taser during a scuffle.

Situated near the Atlantic Ocean, North Charleston has about 100,000 residents, nearly half of whom are black.

"I have full confidence this incident will continue to be investigated by the relevant authorities, the legal process will proceed, and ultimately, justice will be done," said Graham, who is considering a run for the White House in 2016.

"I also know the actions of the officer in this situation do not accurately reflect on the many valuable contributions made by thousands of law-enforcement officers in South Carolina and across our nation."

In addition, Sen. Tim Scott, the state's junior GOP senator, took to Twitter on Wednesday to urge calm within the North Charleston community:

He said Tuesday after the video surfaced:

The recording shows a brief scuffle between Scott and Slager before Scott runs. Slager is then seen taking aim with a handgun before shooting eight times at Scott's back.

Scott is seen slumped face down on the grass and Slager is seen placing him in handcuffs. Slager then walks back to a spot near where he opened fire.

The video then shows Slager appearing to pick something up, return to Scott, and drop it next to him.
