The Washington Post is questioning when President Donald Trump will try to put an end to Saudi Arabia’s detainment and torture of Walid Fitaihi, a prominent doctor.

The newspaper raised the question in an editorial posted Monday night about Fitaihi, who holds a dual U.S. and Saudi Arabian citizenship. It remains unclear why Fitaihi, who earned his medical degree at George Washington University, is in custody in Saudi Arabia, the Post said.

It noted The New York Times quoted a friend that Fitaihi was being pressured to give evidence against a relative.

He was first picked up in November 2017 during a roundup of businessmen and held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh.

“He has been tortured during his captivity,” the editorial said. “He was reportedly grabbed from his room at the Ritz, slapped, blindfolded, stripped to his underwear, bound to a chair, shocked with electricity and whipped so severely that he could not sleep on his back for days.

The paper said the administration’s inaction “does not reflect the best of the United States of America.”
