The younger brother of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has returned home after a prolonged stay in London in an effort to put together a challenge to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Middle East Eye is reporting.
Prince Ahmad bin Abdulaziz has been an open critic of bin Salman, the website noted.
“He and others in the family have realized that MBS has become toxic,” a Saudi source told Middle East Eye.
“The prince wants to play a role to make these changes, which means either he himself will play a major role in any new arrangement or to help to choose an alternative to MBS.”
The source said that the prince returned “after discussion with U.S. and U.K. officials,” who assured him they would not let him be harmed, according to Middle East Eye.
While in London, he reportedly held meetings with other members of the Saudi royal family.
His return comes as bin Salman remains under intense scrutiny following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul.
Khashoggi, a Virginia resident, was killed in early October. The Saudi dissident was critical of bin Salman. Officials in Turkey said Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered.
