White House press secretary Sarah Sanders is planning to depart the Trump administration this year, according to a new report, albeit one she immediately denied via Twitter on Wednesday night.

CBS News reported Wednesday evening that Sanders, who has been the public face of the administration since last summer, has told friends her plan is to leave the White House by the end of this year.

Principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah, CBS reported, is also considering leaving at some point but has not set a specific end date.

Sanders takes questions almost every day of the work week during the White House press briefing. The line of questioning can sometimes lead to tense moments between Sanders and members of the media.

Sanders took over for Sean Spicer, who left the White House in July 2017. She was appointed to the position by Anthony Scaramucci, who served just 11 days as White House communications director.

The West Wing, in particular the communications shop, has seen high turnover during the Trump administration.

"There will be even more people leaving the White House sooner rather than later, laid off or just leaving out of exhaustion, and it is going to be harder to find good people to replace them," a source told CBS News.

"I do think they're going to have a harder time getting the second wave of people in than the first, because those people were loyalists, and [new] folks will have to be recruited and encouraged and then survive the vetting process.

"In addition to all of that, the president prefers to have a small communications staff."

Shah has filled in for Sanders behind the podium in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room on a handful of occasions. He also appears on cable news channels during the day.
