Sanders Hits Back: My Credibility 'Probably Higher Than Media's'

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders went into attack mode from behind the podium during Tuesday's daily briefing after several questions were asked regarding whether she and President Donald Trump are always truthful with the American public.

During the tense briefing, the subject of the infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting and the related statement released in June 2017 on behalf of Donald Trump Jr. came up multiple times. It was revealed in recent days Trump dictated the content of that statement, contradicting prior reporting and Sanders' insistence Trump did not do so.

Sanders was asked if she wanted to take the opportunity to correct the record. She said last fall that Trump did not play a major role in crafting the statement.

"Once again, I'm not gonna go into detail and go into a back and forth," Sanders said. "I know that you guys would love to engage on matters of conversations between the special counsel and the outside counsel. But we've purposely walled off, and I'm not going to comment on the outside counsel.

One reporter pressed and asked, "Why can't you correct the record now?"

"I'm not going to answer questions that deal specifically with conversations between the outside counsel and the special counsel," Sanders said.

When pushed further, Sanders said, "I'm not going to get with a back and forth with you on that. I refer you to outside counsel."

Earlier in the briefing, another reporter asked a similar question.

"I work day in, day out and – I believe with the majority of you here in the room – I think you all know I'm an honest person who works extremely hard to provide you with accurate information at all times," Sanders said. "I'm going to continue to do that, but I'm not going to engage on matters that deal with the outside counsel."

In yet another tense exchange, a reporter gave examples of when Trump and/or Sanders have not told the truth about certain things.

At this point, Sanders went on offense.

"Frankly, I think my credibility is probably higher than the media's," Sanders said. "In large part, that's because you guys spend more of your time focused on attacking the president instead of reporting the news. If you spent a little bit more time reporting the news instead of trying to tear me down, you might actually see we're working hard trying to provide you good information and trying to provide that same good information to the American people."
