DNC Waged a War Sanders Couldn't Win

And you thought Secretary Hillary Clinton had email problems.

Just as the Republicans have united behind Donald Trump, some 20,000 leaked emails have revealed the back-room machinations conducted at the highest levels of the Democratic Party in order to surreptitiously push Secretary Clinton to her Party’s nomination.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) convention begins this week, but it will be characterized by scandal and dissension, as demonstrated by the fact that its tainted leader, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has already announced her resignation as chair (effective at week’s end).

For months, the DNC has scoffed while both Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders relentlessly contended that the primaries were rigged in favor of Secretary Clinton. But now there is evidence to prove that they were right, evidence that calls the legitimacy of the entire Democratic Party primary process into question.

In a May 21 email, Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz mocked the prospects of a Sen. Sanders presidency, calling it “silly” and adding, “He isn’t going to be president.” There is no question that a cabal, led by Wasserman Schultz and high-ranking members of the DNC, has been in place for months and that its sole, illicit purpose was to prevent Sanders from having a serious chance at winning his party’s nomination.

The Democratic establishment may not have taken Sanders (or his “democratic” socialist ideology) very seriously at the outset.  But when he began racking up delegates and states, it became clear that his platform was resonating with many voters.

By the end, Sanders had taken 23 states outright and would have secured the party nomination but for the superdelegates (i.e., the DNC cabal) selecting Secretary Clinton over him.

His success points, to some degree, to Clinton’s scandals and weaknesses, but also to a profound leftward shift in ideology among Democrats.  It is why Sanders was able to push Clinton further and further left during their debates.  It is why Clinton has now adopted Sanders’ free college platform promise.  And it is why Sanders is addressing the convention in prime time later tonight.

This is a candidate who has spoken of moral equivalence between Israel and terrorist groups, a candidate who made it his ardent mission to attempt to dismantle big banks and Wall Street’s very infrastructure — a course of action viewed as profoundly damaging to many in the Democratic establishment. Indeed, Sanders is the face of the existential crisis facing the Democratic Party.

As the Democratic Party trends more and more left, so do its establishment candidates. They believe that they must keep sliding left in order to survive.

Clinton’s selection of Sen. Tim Kaine as her running-mate is the case in point. Stated simply, Kaine is far from a moderate, and it is extremely difficult to make a serious case that he is pro-Israel.

This is a man who supported the Iran nuclear deal, was one of the first senators to boycott Prime Minister Netanyahu’s 2015 speech to Congress, is an adamant proponent of imposing a two-state solution and has been linked to J-Street, an extreme-left advocacy group that has repeatedly supported U.N. human rights condemnations against Israel.

If your head is spinning while you try to figure out how this current version of the Democratic Party would treat Israel, you are not alone, and the problem starts at the top.

Wasserman Schultz and the DNC have routinely hurled unfounded allegations of anti-Semitism against Donald Trump that are entirely incongruous with Trump’s life-long ideology, actions and beliefs.

It’s easy for DNC leaders to take a stand, however baseless, against anti-Semitism when it can be used as a tool to try and discredit their formidable opponent. And yet, we now know that other members of the DNC leadership are also all too willing to use religious beliefs to discredit a rival candidate from their own party.

Among the leaked emails was one from Brad Marshall, the DNC’s chief financial officer, in which he conspired with DNC CEO Amy Dacey, and others, to bring down Sanders by questioning his “Jewish heritage” and belief in God. The audacity and shamefulness of this tactic is disturbing; Marshall wrote: “It might may (sic) no difference, but for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief.

"Does he believe in a God? He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”

Truly appalling.

But such is the state of the Democratic Party today. They hurl claims of anti-Semitism against Donald Trump, whose commitment to Israel is resolute and beyond question, because it suits their agenda, and then they conspire in back rooms to discredit a Democratic rival to Secretary Clinton based on his religion.

Meanwhile, they are slipping so far to the left that their commitment to America’s most critical ally, Israel, is uncertain at best. Who knows how many more Democratic Party officials will take the fall to try to save Clinton from further scandal, but there is one thing that is now more clear than ever: this is not about a few bad apples, this is about a party that is rotten to the core.
