Despite what some Republicans say, a House impeachment of President Donald Trump would be bad for his re-election chances, former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg told Newsmax TV.

Newsmax host John Bachman spoke with Nunberg following Robert Mueller's press conference regarding the findings of his Russia investigation Wednesday morning.

"You still don't want to be a president who was impeached, whether or not the Republicans — he obviously will not lose any of his 96% of support in the Republican base, John," Nunberg said.

"But on the other hand, I think it would also motivate Democrats more for the 2020 elections. And it's just not a good look for that 20% of the independents, which then make up the 5% of swing voters in the general.

"Is it a kamikaze mission from the point of view [of], is he going to be indicted and removed from office? No. But is it good for him being re-elected? I think it's a net negative blow."

Democrats are vowing to continue investigating Trump and have not ruled out chasing an impeachment despite Mueller's report that concluded the Trump campaign did not conspire with the Russians. Attorney General William Barr decided not to pursue an obstruction of justice case against Trump after Mueller declined to come to a conclusion on it.

Nunberg said it is now up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to get control of her party and clamp down on the impeachment talk — or press forward on it, if that is her choice.

"What it ultimately does is put more pressure on Nancy Pelosi to either put up or shut up on impeachment," he said.
