Business software company Salesforce is telling retailers that sell military-style firearms to stop selling the guns or stop using their software, The Washington Post reports.
Salesforce recently changed its acceptable-use policy, warning customers that they “may not use a Service to transact online sales” of “automatic firearms; semi-automatic firearms that have the capacity to accept a detachable magazine,” and “semi-automatic firearms with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds,” as well as certain firearm accessories, to “private citizens.”
“It is a very chilling effect when a company as large as Salesforce puts out a policy like this,” said Mark Oliva, National Shooting Sports Foundation public affairs director, who notes that the business is based in San Francisco. “A policy like this is not surprising from a company based in that part of the country.”
Salesforce spokesperson Gina Sheibley told the Post that the new policy will affect “a small number of existing customers when their current contracts expire.”
Bloomberg reported last year that hundreds of Salesforce staffers signed a letter to Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff to criticize the company’s contracts with U.S. Customs and Border Protection over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Benioff has expressed support for gun control measures, tweeting in February, 2018 that the AR-15 should be banned.
“The AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America. Ban it,” he wrote.
