President Donald Trump donated his third quarter salary of 2017 to a government effort to combat the opioid crisis, it was announced Thursday.
Acting Health and Human Services Secretary Eric Hargan spoke at the White House press briefing and revealed the news.
"Part of the way we aim to stop this crisis is by raising awareness of how devastating and deadly drug addiction can be," Hargan said. "That's why we're so pleased that President Trump has chosen to donate his salary this quarter to the planning and design of a large scale public awareness campaign about the dangers of opioid addiction. HHS is proud to be working with the White House on this effort.
"At HHS, our goal is to create healthier lives, stronger communities, and a safer country. We're glad to have a president that recognizes that the opioid crisis is a huge threat to all three of these goals."
The president earns an annual salary of $400,000, along with various amounts for travel and expenses.
In October, Trump declared the opioid crisis — which killed an estimated 65,000 Americans in 2016 — a public health emergency.
Trump donated his first quarter salary to the National Park Service and his second quarter earnings to the Department of Education.
