House Speaker Paul Ryan said that newly elected senator Mitt Romney, his former running mate, can be the “standard-bearer” for Republicans in Congress like the late Sen. John McCain.

Ryan, R-Wis., said “it’s great” that Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts who was elected to the Senate in Utah, is coming to Capitol Hill.

"It’s great that he’s coming," Ryan said of Romney at a Q&A with The Washington Post on Thursday, according to Politico. "Mitt believes there’s a role for him … as a standard-bearer for our party.”

Ryan, who is retiring after his term ends in January, said in his final interview as House Speaker that he does not support a Senate bill to end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s military in response to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying he would prefer to sanction the country under the terms of the Magnitsky Act.

He also said that he disagrees with President Donald Trump’s position of protecting the country’s arms deal with Saudi Arabia instead of sanctioning the country’s leadership for ordering the killing.

"There’s a time for realpolitik, but only if your foreign policy speaks with moral clarity to begin with," Ryan said.
