Russia is ramping up its nuclear capabilities and has set up 150 strategic nuclear warheads over the past year, according to new State Department figures.

At the same time, The Washington Free Beacon reports, the United States cut its nuclear forces by 57 warheads.

The Beacon's Bill Gertz says the State Department's figures show Russia is doubling its supply of strategic nuclear warheads and is over the limit of 1,550 warheads under the New START arms treaty, which calls for the U.S. and Russia to cut its deployed strategic warheads supply to 1,550 by 2018.

Mark Schneider, who worked for the Pentagon as a nuclear forces policymaker, tells Gertz:

"I believe the odds are that Russia will terminate the treaty in 2017. That would pocket all the U.S. reductions, give them more weapons, and it might be seen by [Russian leader Vladimir] Putin as revenge for the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty [withdrawal]."

The Beacon says the recent Russian increases are the result of the deployment of new, road-mobile warhead missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
