Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly thinks Donald Trump's "extravagant behavior" is just his way of getting his message across to voters "tired of having the elite in power for decades."

At a meeting of foreign policy experts in Sochi, Putin appeared to explain – and understand – the GOP nominee's campaign strategy, Business Insider reported.

"He has chosen a method to get through to voters' hearts," Putin said at the annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, according to Business Insider.

Trump "behaves extravagantly of course, we see this, but I think there's a reason for this," Putin said, according to the outlet. "He represents part of U.S. society that's tired of having the elite in power for decades."

But Putin dismissed the claim he supports Trump over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, calling it "nonsense," Business Insider reported.

"For us, it doesn't really make a difference, but of course we can't not welcome words, thoughts, intentions that are publicly expressed about normalizing relations between the U.S. and Russia," he said, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Putin also pushed back on accusations Moscow is hacking Democratic Party groups to try to influence the election outcome.

"Does anybody seriously think that Russia could somehow influence the choice of the American people?" he said, per the Journal. "Is it a banana republic or something? America is a great power."

But he also mocked the lack of substance in the 2016 presidential race.

"Elections have stopped being an instrument of change, and have been reduced to scandals, to mudslinging, to questions of who pinched whom, and who is sleeping with whom," he said, per the Journal.

Business Insider noted Putin and Clinton have a history of mistrust – from her claim in 2011 that Russia's elections that year were fraudulent and her support for a military intervention in Libya to oust Moammar Gadhafi – while Trump's positions are reportedly more in line with Putin's.

Putin has described Trump as "colorful" and "lively" and "talented."

Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, resigned this summer amid controversy over his previous position advising the Party of Regions, the political party led by the Russian-backed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych before he was driven out of power in 2014 and exiled to southern Russia.
