Former Obama National Security Adviser Tom Donilon said Friday that reports Russia hacked a contractor's personal computer to steal critical data on accessing foreign computer networks proved that "we have work to do with respect to cybersecurity."

"I don't think the government confirmed the story, but if it's true, it's either an insider or someone who made a mistake," Donilon, who also served in the Clinton White House, told Wolf Blitzer on CNN.

"That really means we have to up our game in terms of protecting the federal networks in terms of the core cyber networks."

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Moscow stole data on how the U.S. accesses foreign computer networks from an NSA contractor's personal computer.

Donilon told Blitzer that "we are in an active hostile posture with the Russians right now.

"Since [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's return in 2012, we are in a different posture — and they are going to take advantage of everything they can.

"We're hostile in Syria, with Putin, Africa — and, most directly, the Russians undertook an effort to affect the U.S. election," he said.

"This is the posture we're in, so we have to up our game on cybersecurity."
