Marco Rubio: Turkey Facing Further Threats From ISIS

ISIS is seeking to terrorize Turkey through hurting its tourism industry, said Sen. Marco Rubio Wednesday, and he is confident that the Islamist terrorists were behind the deadly suicide bombings at Istanbul's international airport on Tuesday.

"They want to take it over one day," the Florida Republican told Fox News' Martha MacCallum on the "America's Newsroom" program. "Turkey is participating in anti-ISIS initiatives and operations. The way they want to terrorize the Turkish people is to hurt their tourism."

There have been attacks in Istanbul and downtown centers that tourists frequent, Rubio noted, and he believes there will be even more attacks.

"ISIS clearly wants to be involved in Turkey, even though there has been no official confirmation or anyone taking credit," the former 2016 GOP presidential candidate continued.

"This wasn't the Kurdish element in Turkey. They usually hit buses full of soldiers. Al-Qaida hasn't shown a propensity to be involved in Turkey. I'm fairly confident this is an ISIS operation to scare tourists away."

To help fight the problem, two things need to happen, said Rubio. For one, the United States needs to "hit their nerve center, which is where ISIS is able to inspire people to conduct the source of attacks. They don't actually necessarily have to have people come to Raqqa."

In addition, the United States needs a better relationship with Turkey, which is a NATO ally, said Rubio.

"I have expressed in the past that the Turks weren't taking their ISIS problem as seriously as they should," the senator said. "My argument was it's going to happen and you won't be able to cover it up. I hope we can improve our intelligence sharing with the Turks.

"Their strikes from the air base in Turkey which they did allow us to do and which we thank them for is the main reason ISIS has chosen to ramp up its focus on Turkey."

Rubio also commented about the House Select Committee on Benghazi report released on Tuesday, saying he found it contained a great deal of information about the Obama administration's decisions.

"Even a flyover of American jets would have been enough to scare some people off," said Rubio.

"They didn't want to offend what was then a Libyan government. That consideration to me, I don't understand it, and they have to answer for it. Hillary Clinton's allies will try to whitewash this. But there is no covering up the incompetence and our willingness or inability to save these Americans we put in harm's way."
