Sen. Marco Rubio says he supports Republican nominee Donald Trump for president, even though he won't take back any of the things he said about the real estate mogul during the GOP primaries, including that he was a 'con artist.'

"I've stood by everything I ever said in my campaign," Rubio told the Miami Herald editorial board.

Rubio also explained the reason why he changed his mind and decided to run again for the Senate after failing to win the presidential nomination.

"There are two people in the world that are going to be the next president, either Donald or Hillary Clinton," Rubio said. "While the presidency is powerful, there is a balance of power in this country, and a significant amount of it resides in the United States Senate. It's one of the reasons why I seek to run again."

Rubio told the Miami Herald he would not take the job of secretary of state if it was offered him, insisting that from his perspective, there was more work to be done in the Senate.

Polls show Rubio comfortably ahead in the Republican Senate primary race later this month, but his advantage against the top Democratic candidate has been significantly narrowing, which some blame on Trump dragging down all Republicans on the ballot.
