Ronan Farrow: Weinstein Threatened Lawsuit Over Expose

Ronan Farrow, who published his expose concerning movie producer Harvey Weinstein through The New Yorker after his employer, NBC News, rejected it, said Thursday that Weinstein came after him when he was working on the item.

"There were many calls to all of my representatives, many angry meetings, and also in paper, in writing, I have him threaten to go sue me," Farrow told CNN's "New Day" program. "It reinforces how hard it was for the women. He went after them in this way and set up a vast machine to silence them, PR threats, legal threats."

Farrow said on Wednesday that he does not wish to be a "sensationalist," and he admitted there were "plenty" of people who did not know the details behind Weinstein's actions.

"However, 16 executives, former and current, talked to me and said we either saw something firsthand, we witnessed a pattern at meetings or were asked to participate in them and they were a little more than thin cover for predatory behavior," Farrow said. "They talked about profound guilt, many of them."

NBC has come under fire for not running Farrow's story, but told Politico Tuesday that the story that eventually ran in The New Yorker "was nowhere close" to what appeared in the magazine.

Farrow, who has become a reporter after his MSNBC program was canceled in 2015, told CNN it is "important to keep the focus" on the women involved in the story.

"They tore their guts out, telling the most difficult things [for] them," Farrow said. "Mira Sorvino, you should read that."

News organizations have had a "long history" in "circling the story," he added, even "after having damning pieces of evidence."

"People should and will, I'm sure, look at that," Farrow said, but still, he said does not wish to make the story about NBC's refusal to use it.

He said the women who went on the record with him were "terrified."

"This was hard because I had to work with them as they relieved this trauma over and over with nothing to gain," he said. "They got nothing out of this except the truth, and I say the truth because they went through a rigorous fact check process. They were not running banging down the doors of reporters. They told me they finally spoke out because they had realized from other women that this was a pattern, and they thought they could speak out and end this and protect the next woman."

The issue of sexual harassment, he continued, is one that's bigger than just Weinstein or Hollywood, but instead is about abuse of power.

"It happens in every industry," he told CNN. "It has happened in our news industry. This should be a lesson how important the bravery of women can be and how they should speak out in every business where this happens, which is across the board."
