Sen. Ron Johnson: Affordable Care Act Not Living Up to Its Name

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is not living up to its name: Millions are losing healthcare protection while costs are rising, Sen. Ron Johnson said Monday.

"We're seeing patients aren't necessarily protected ... as millions are losing their healthcare. And we certainly didn't bend the cost-curve down," the Wisconsin Republican told "Fox & Friends."

While the tax rate for those who choose not to participate in Obamacare begins at $95 the first year of its implementation, that cost will rise to 2.5 percent of a person's income in three years, Johnson explained.

Young people are especially hard-hit, the lawmaker said.

For those who do participate in Obamacare, he said, a 27-year-old man in Wisconsin could expect to see insurance costs rise, on average, 124 percent, "from about $1,100 a year to over $2,400 per year."

Johnson said he believed in a safety net to protect people with regard to healthcare. The problem, he maintained, was that it wasn't necessary to change the entire healthcare system in order to accomplish that.

"This administration decided to destroy the entire system to provide a strong social safety net. You didn't have to do that. You didn't need 20,000 pages of rules and laws to fix this problem," Johnson said.
