DeSantis Campaign Cuts Staff by One-Third

By    |   Tuesday, 25 July 2023 02:26 PM EDT

Gov. Ron DeSantis is cutting back a third of his presidential campaign staff, reducing it from an operation that had more than 90 people involved in his first two months as a primary candidate, sources close to the situation report.

The GOP governor of Florida let go of 10 staff members last week, and earlier this month, two senior-level campaign advisers left, and Tuesday, the campaign announced further aides leaving, bringing the total number of reductions to 38, reports Politico.

DeSantis has been losing ground in the polls to former President Donald Trump, leading donors and allies to question the strength of his chances, particularly after reports of his campaign finances showed his payroll was about twice that of Trump's, reports The New York Times.

Meanwhile, the campaign has gone through 40% of the $20 million brought in from April through June, according to records released this month.

This meant he started July with just $9 million left from his initial haul, with much of that money coming from donors who has already given him the maximum amount allowed, so they couldn't contribute to the campaign again.

DeSantis campaign manager Generra Pack confirmed that the changes came after a "top-to-bottom review of our organization," and said that "we have taken additional, aggressive steps to streamline operations and put Ron DeSantis in the strongest position to win this primary and defeat Joe Biden."

The news came after reports that DeSantis was in a car crash Tuesday during a fund-raising trip to Tennessee. He was not injured in the accident.

The reduction in his payroll follows a donor retreat in Park City, Utah, where his campaign officials and super PAC advisers made presentations about the race, but two people who were present said there was little talk of the campaign cutbacks at the event.

Instead, they said, the people present focused on making adjustments and finding ways to help DeSantis spread his campaign message.

People familiar with the discussions said Peck's leadership for the campaign also became the topic of private conversations among donors, but the weekend wrapped up with her still in charge.
