Romney: Obama Taking Personal Shots at Me

By    |   Tuesday, 29 May 2012 02:08 PM EDT

President Barack Obama is now taking personal shots at him in the campaign, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney said in an Fox News interview.

“I can make the economy better. I can get more jobs for America. I can make competition between employers for jobs and wages. I understand how the economy works," Romney said.

"The president wants to make this a personal attack campaign; he’s going after me as an individual. Look, I’m an American, I love this country. I have experience in the economy that’s going to help me get good jobs for Americans so we can be secure again,” Romney told Bill Hemmer of Fox News.

Romney’s response comes after a $25 million ad-blitz this month financed by the Obama campaign which paints Romney as a corporate raider, focused on wealth creation, not job creation—a reference to Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital, a private equity firm.

The ad blitz doesn’t appear to be having an effect so far as Romney had the edge over Obama among voters leading into the Memorial Day weekend, according to the latest Rasmussen poll, earning 45 percent of the vote to Obama’s 44 percent, with five percent favoring a third party candidate and six percent undecided. The candidates have been within two points of each other for almost two weeks. In the key states of Indiana and Pennsylvania, Romney leads the president by six points.
