Wilkie: Student Debt Order Will Help Thousands of Vets

By    |   Thursday, 22 August 2019 03:42 PM

President Donald Trump's order to eliminate all federal student loan debt for veterans who are permanently disabled will help some 25,000 veterans so they can eliminate a heavy financial obligation at a time when they are confronting their daily struggles, Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie said Thursday.

"Earlier in the year, last year, we put those who hold the Purple Heart out the front of the line when it comes to claims and benefits, and this is the second part of the president's effort to take care for those who have done the most," Wilkie said during an interview on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

Wilkie said there has been no pushback on the plan from anyone in Congress, and he would be shocked if there was any opposition.

The move helps streamline the process for veterans, said Wilkie, because the only thing the VA will need to do is certify that the veteran seeking a waiver is 100% combat-disabled.

"That will cut down on the frustrations that many of them have experienced in the last few years," he added.

Meanwhile, the VA is doing all it can to help cut down on the numbers of veterans who commit suicide and to help others suffering from depression, said Wilkie.

He noted that the FDA has approved the use of a new nasal spray, Spravato, that is used under a doctor's supervision to help with treatment-resistant depression, and the medication will be available at VA hospitals if approved by a patient's team.
