Former Whitewater prosecutor Robert Ray, who has met with clients being housed in Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional Center where Jeffrey Epstein died last weekend, said Wednesday that the special housing unit where the financier was being held is a "very different place" than where the jail's general population stays.

"You see very few people visibly or that you are aware of," Ray told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"There are prison guards around, you go through a whole bunch of security procedures to get to the appropriate floor, and it's a very isolating experience."

His comments came after the warden at the understaffed jail was removed and two guards who were supposed to be watching Epstein, 66, were placed on leave while federal authorities continue their investigation into whether the jail failed to keep him from harming himself.

Ray said he does not know how many guards are nornally on duty at the jail during a Saturday overnight shift because "it's intended that you don't know how many people are around."

"You encounter maybe two or three people to pass through an area [that is] very isolated," said Ray. "I've been in the special housing unit, for example, when there are security precautions in place where I'm not free to leave, even if I desire to go after I've completed an interview of a client. I could be there an hour or two beyond the time allocated simply because of the security procedures that don't allow me to leave until they've decided that I am free to go."

However, he said it's one thing to talk about a usual prisoner and another to talk about Epstein, the "foremost prosecution pending in the United States."
