Special Counsel Robert Mueller has chosen Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr as his media liaison for the federal probe he's overseeing into claims of collusion between Russia and members of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, according to officials.
Carr comes equipped with a resume of serving in similar roles in various areas of the government, Politico reported Friday. He has served the past four years as lead spokesman for the Criminal Division of the Justice Department.
He was acting director of public affairs during the transition between the Trump administration and that of former President Barack Obama. He has also been spokesman for Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, as well as the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Virginia, which has offices in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk and Newport News.
Mueller has begun working on the investigation and has set up an office in a building near D.C. Superior Court in Northwest Washington, according to Justice Department officials, although there were no details on how he would staff and structure his office.
"The special counsel's office is up and running now," Assistant Attorney General for Administration Lee Lofthus said at a Tuesday briefing.
