Former White House staff secretary Rob Porter met off the record with four reporters after The Daily Mail published a photograph of his first wife with a black eye — and he told the journalists that she had fallen and had bruised her eye, according to reports Tuesday.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders arranged the meeting last week with Maggie Haberman of The New York Times, The Washington Post's Josh Dawsey, Jonathan Swan of Axios, and The Wall Street Journal's Michael Bender.

Politico reported the meeting Tuesday, citing "a person familiar with the exchange."

Porter, 40, resigned the day after the Daily Mail first reported the allegations of domestic abuse on Feb. 6.

He confirmed his resignation to the journalists, Politico reports.

The reporters also pressed Porter on how his first wife, Colbie Holderness, acquired the injury and to explain his comment that he had taken the picture that appeared with the Mail's report.

"He told them what he had told his colleagues," Politico reports. "That, on vacation in Florence, the two had quarreled over a Venetian glass vase," and that Holderness "had fallen and bruised her eye."

In addition, when Porter confirmed that he was leaving the White House, Sanders and two other communications staffers — Josh Raffel and Raj Shah—"interjected that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly had urged Porter to stay," Politico reports.

Porter also conceded in the meeting that he had called his second wife, Jennifer Willoughby, "a f***ing bitch" while on their honeymoon in 2009, as the Daily Mail had reported.

According to Politico, at least one reporter considered the meeting the opportunity for Porter "to defend himself while letting the White House distance itself from him by not speaking on his behalf."

The journalists, "in keeping with the off-the-record terms, did not use the information conveyed in the meeting," Politico reports.

"They were attempting to do a prudent thing stupidly," another person familiar with the session told Politico.
