The Republican National Committee shelled out $2 million in April for legal services to former White House counsel Donald McGahn’s law firm — raising questions about its impact on his decision not to testify Tuesday before Congress.

In an Federal Election Commission filing itemized by ProPublica, the RNC’s top expense in April was $2 million for "legal and compliance services" to McGahn’s firm, Jones Day, out of $14.3 million total spending last month.

The RNC said in a statement the payment was a bulk billing for two years’ worth of work, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The Post reported the payment was the largest RNC payment to the firm recorded in recent years.

The payments went to Jones Day in the same month the House Judiciary Committee began seeking McGahn’s testimony in connection with its investigation into potential obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump, the Post noted.

The RNC has spent more than $3.3 million on legal fees since 2017; the Democratic National Committee has spent $1.4 million, the Post reported.

McGahn previously was a partner at Jones Day from 2014 to 2017, when he left to join the White House. He returned to the firm in March, the Post reported.
