Nearly 85,000 people left Puerto Rico in a 42-day period, Florida Gov. Rick Scott told the island's representative in Congress earlier this month.

Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon made the comments at a Ripon Society breakfast where she and two Republican lawmakers discussed the future of Puerto Rico.

"Puerto Rico's main source of income is not tourism, it's manufacturing," Gonzalez-Colon said earlier this month. "That means when you have zero revenue because of no power on the island, the already weakened economy is going to get worse.

"That's the reason you're seeing 1,000 Puerto Ricans leave the island daily," Gonzalez-Colon said. "I just spoke with the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, and he told me that more than 84,000 Puerto Ricans left Puerto Rico over the past 42 days."

And that was Nov. 2.

House Republicans Sean Duffy, R-Wis., and Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., joined Gonzalez-Colon at the breakfast to weigh in on "what's next" for Puerto Rico.

"I look at an island with 3.5 million people," MacArthur told the gathering, "3.5 million Americans who can leave at will. And they do — a thousand a day right now. Young people who don't see a future. They get on a plane and go to Florida.

"They land in Florida, and they become eligible for many things that they don't get in Puerto Rico. There's a brain drain underway on this island — that is first and foremost what I see as a problem," MacArthur said.

"We have an opportunity to rethink what Puerto Rico's future is," Duffy said. "We have the opportunity to say, 'We've seen the failure of a big government experiment.' How great is it for us to then say, 'What can we do in Congress to actually make this a great home for investment of capital?"
