President Donald Trump was joking when he said he has a higher IQ than Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the White House said Tuesday.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked about comments Trump made during an interview with Forbes, in which he seemed to call into question Tillerson's intelligence.

"The president certainly never implied the secretary of state was not incredibly intelligent," Sanders said. "He made a joke, nothing more than that. He has full confidence in the secretary of state.

"They had a great visit earlier [Tuesday], and they're working hand in hand to move the president's agenda forward."

Toward the end of the briefing, Sanders was asked about the subject again. A reporter wondered how Tillerson can do his job with the president making remarks like that.

"Again, he wasn't questioning the secretary of state's intelligence," Sanders said. "He made a joke. Maybe you should get a sense of humor and try it sometime.

"He simply made a joke. He's been extremely clear time and time again, despite the fact that you want to continue to bring this up and create a story. He's got 100 percent confidence in the secretary of state. He said it multiple times over the last couple of weeks."
