The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday voted down a Democrat-sponsored amendment that would have funded gun research, the
Washington Examiner reported.
The Committee voted 31-18 to not include funding for the Centers for Disease Control to conduct the research, extending the ban that's been in place since 1996.
"Gun violence is a crime, not a disease," Rep. Andy Harris, R-MD., told the Examiner, adding that it "doesn't belong in the CDC, especially when there are advocates for gun control in control of that money."
Former Rep. Jay Dickey introduced the ban on the CDC conducting gun research back in 1996.
Dickey sent a letter to the chair of the House Democrats' task force on gun violence in 2015, expressing regret for the ban.
