Republicans didn't hold back after learning that inflation had reached a 40-year high.
The Labor Department on Wednesday said the consumer price index increased 1.3% last month, resulting in the largest annual inflation increase in 40 1/2 years.
President Joe Biden, while on a trip to the Middle East, released a statement saying the "unacceptably high" June inflation figures were "out of date."
Several people being mentioned as potential contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination or for a spot on the national ticket quickly commented on the news.
"Brutal inflation report shows a devastating increase of 9.1.% year-over-year. Bidenflation is wreaking havoc on workers, families & small businesses — a consequence of anti-American energy policy, exorbitant borrowing & printing of money & counterproductive federal regulations,” Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Florida, tweeted.
"Inflation has surged to 9.1%, hitting a new FOUR-DECADE high! This is outrageous! @JoeBiden's reckless leadership is doing nothing but hurting the American people!" former Vice President Mike Pence tweeted atop the CNBC story.
"As prices skyrocket at the pump, President Biden places the blame on everyone EXCEPT himself. Now he's telling gas stations to lower their prices, as if they set the market price. Absurd. This is what happens when you elect people who have spent their career on Capitol Hill," former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted.
"Inflation has risen 9.1% since last year! President Biden is overseeing the highest inflation in over 40 years and Democrats have an agenda that will only make inflation worse. #Bidenflation," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted with a CNBC story about the consumer price index.
"Joe Biden says inflation is fake," Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said in a retweet of Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman's sharing of Biden's official statement on the inflation rise.
"Today's report of 9.1% inflation is more bad news for the country. For too long this administration has denied the reality of the economic situation, caused by Democrats' out of control spending," Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. tweeted.
"Ok Joe. Now will you acknowledge we have a problem? America can't afford you any longer," former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley tweeted with a screenshot of Axios reporting "scorching" inflation.
Other GOP members also chimed in on inflation.
"Maybe the most out of touch statement you'll ever see from a White House. Biden's basically saying it's not that bad, and you're welcome for $4.60 gas prices,” Republican National Committee Research Director Zach Parkinson tweeted with Sherman's post.
"Inflation when Biden took office: 1.4% Inflation today: 9.1%," RNC Research tweeted.
