Just under half — 48% — of likely voters say they would cast their ballots for the Republican congressional candidate, while 41% would vote for the Democrat, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.
The 7-point gap is an increase over last week's generic congressional poll, in which Republicans led 47% to 43%.
The poll results were released Friday:
- 85% of Republican voters say they would vote for their own party's congressional candidate.
- 82% of Democrats say they would vote for the candidate representing their party.
- 46% of independents say they would vote for the Republican, while 30% would vote for the Democrat. The reminder would vote for another candidate or were undecided.
- 53% of men say they prefer the Republican congressional candidate; 43% of women say they prefer the GOP candidate.
The poll, conducted Oct. 9-13, surveyed 2,500 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
