Two prominent Republicans — Mac Thornberry of Texas and Devin Nunes of California have urged President Barack Obama to penalize Russia for violating a key nuclear treaty, causing concern to U.S. forces over intermediate-range cruise missiles, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

Nunes, who is the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and Thornberry, who leads the House Armed Services Committee, wrote a two-page letter to President Obama, expressing the "urgent concern" over what they feared as Russia's "near-decade-long pattern of violations that undermine this seminal arms control treaty and place it on the verge of collapse."

The two congressmen also stated that Moscow's violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, also known as the INF had "worsened" in recent times.

"It has become apparent to us that the situation regarding Russia's violation has worsened and Russia is now in material breach of the Treaty," Thornberry and Nunes wrote.

"As a result of Russia's actions, the chairmen are concerned that U.S. forces, as well as our allies in East Asia and Europe, will soon be at risk from intermediate-range ground-launched cruise missiles (GLCMs). Military leaders have warned that it will be next-to-impossible to detect when these missiles are deployed," they wrote.

The INF Treaty, which was signed in December 1987, helps protect the security of the U.S. and its allies in Europe and the Far East, prohibits the United States and Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying a ground-launched cruise missile with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles, according to ABC News.

Nunes called Obama's response to repeated Russian breaches as "another misstep contributing to the spreading perception of American weakness and indecisiveness," according to Washington Examiner.

There is an on-going tension between Moscow and Washington following another ceasefire violation in Syria which led to a breakdown of diplomatic talks.
