Republican lawmakers are distancing themselves from Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa and offering support for his main primary challenger, The Hill is reporting.

King had touched off a firestorm when he defended his call on abortions by questioning whether there would be any population of the world left if not for births due to rape and incest.

Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich., said he will contribute the maximum amount of King’s opponent in the primary, according to The Hill.

“I will be openly contributing to his primary opponent and encouraging others to do the same,” he said. “Enough of his destructive commentary.

“In my opinion Steve King does not reflect the values or principles of our conference."

And Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, said he also is considering supporting King’s primary opponent.

King raised $91,000 in the last fundraising quarter, The Hill reported. Iowa state Sen. Randy Feenstra, considered the most prominent of King’s three primary opponents took in $140,000.

Meanwhile, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., called King’s comments “bizarre” and said: “It’s time for him to go.”
