McCaul: Russia at Strongest Levels in West Since Cuban Missile Crisis

By    |   Wednesday, 01 May 2019 03:06 PM

By propping up Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Russia is more involved in the Western Hemisphere than it has been at any point since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Rep. Michael McCaul said Wednesday, while commenting on reports that Moscow had talked Maduro out of leaving.

"We haven't seen the Russians in the Western Hemisphere this strongly since the Cuban missile crisis, with military assets," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "They would love nothing more than to poke us in the eye."

The news itself that Maduro was heading to the tarmac to leave Venezuela for Havana is "extremely significant," McCaul added while echoing claims made by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Russia and Cuba have been keeping the Maduro administration in power.

"We have the Cuban security forces and the Russians propping up Maduro, fighting the forces of democracy and free and fair elections," said McCaul.

President Donald Trump Tuesday threatened, through Twitter, a “full and complete embargo” as well as strict sanctions on Cuba if its troops don't leave Venezuela.

On Wednesday, McCaul said that a "military option is on the table," but "it's the last option we want to exercise," as more sanctions and pressure have to come first.

"I would argue that it is the Colombians and Brazilians and Argentinians and Lima group that need to lead this effort," McCaul said. "The people of Venezuela are standing up against this socialist dictator. This is what a socialist dictator does to his country. He has destroyed the most successful country in Latin America."
