Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., fired back at critics who questioned her patriotism after her controversial remark on the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Omar defended herself Wednesday during an interview on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”
“I took an oath to uphold the Constitution,” she said” “I am as American as everyone else is.”
The Washington Post noted Omar’s 9/11 remark came last month during a speech before the Council on American Islamic Relations in Los Angeles. Omar, who is Muslim, incorrectly noted the organization was started after the attacks. It actually had been founded in 1994.
“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”
The remarks drew strong criticism from Republicans, who claimed she had downplayed the terrorist attacks. And conservatives also attacked her for a Monday tweet in which she called White House senior adviser Stephen a “white nationalist.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, tweeted on Tuesday: “First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as “some people who did something.”
And Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel accused Omar of being “anti-American,” the Post noted.
Omar told Colbert: “You see this outrage when I speak the truth. Everyone else’s truth is allowed, but my truth can never be.”
