Pope Francis was unfairly snubbed for the Nobel Peace Prize, former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Raymond Flynn complains in an opinion piece for The Boston Herald.

"Francis' tireless pursuit of reconciliation and dialogue among countries has been unmatched by any moral or political leader in recent times," writes Flynn, who is a former Boston mayor. "His message of inclusion and diplomacy has made him a lone voice of reason in the world."

The pope has also created controversy within his own church by asking "who am I to judge" while reaching out to dissenting Catholics, including homosexual priests, said Flynn, adding that the pontiff had to know that would cause problems in the church.

Francis has also worked to avoid politics becoming involved in his papacy, even though Democrats and Republicans have tried to pull him their way, said Flynn.

However, Flynn said he was not surprised the Nobel committee did not pick Pope Francis, as the panel also passed over Pope John Paul II for his role in ending communism in Eastern Europe.

"Not to diminish the important role that the winners of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize, the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, played in helping their country transition into a democracy, but if I had a voice in the selection, it would have gone to a figure with a worldwide impact," said Flynn.

He said that he could also see suspending this year's award because of all the chaos in the world, as has been done during times of war.

"Presenting the Nobel Peace Prize in today’s troubled world sometimes seems meaningless to me," Flynn said. "The world is crying out for men and women of goodwill, but it seems all we get are tyrants and manipulators. We certainly could use more peacemakers with a global reach like Francis."
