Rasmussen Poll: Most Want Obama to Work With Congress

By    |   Tuesday, 01 July 2014 10:34 PM EDT

Most Americans would prefer that President Barack Obama work with Congress rather than go it alone to solve problems facing the country, a new poll shows.

The Rasmussen Reports poll found that 55 percent of those surveyed think the government should do only what the president and Congress can agree on when it comes to important issues.

Just 35 percent of voters say Obama should take action on his own when Congress doesn't cooperate, the survey finds.

Split along party lines, 58 percent of Democrats say Obama should act on his own, while 82 percent of Republicans oppose that, the poll finds.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The poll came as Obama on Tuesday pushed back at GOP criticism of his use of executive actions to work on issues that Congress has not taken up.

After House Speaker John Boehner's statement that Congress won't pass immigration reform legislation this year, the president announced he'd begin efforts to fix the immigration system on his own.

Regarding the executive actions Obama has taken in the White House, 44 percent of respondents think the president has been less faithful to the Constitution than most other presidents.

Twenty-two percent say Obama has been more faithful to the Constitution than most of his predecessors, while 30 percent say he has followed the Constitution about the same as other presidents have, the poll finds.
