Fake documents purporting to contain bombshells about Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election are being shopped to reporters in a diabolical attempt to discredit the media, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow says.
On her MSNBC show on Thursday, Maddow said she was one of the intended victims of the hoax when she was sent a document that appeared to contain "unbelievably red hot" information.
But after some red flags were raised, the document was called out as forged and a complete fraud.
"Somebody, for some reason, appears to be shopping a fairly convincing fake NSA document that purports to directly implicate somebody from the Trump campaign in working with the Russians on their attack on the election. It is a forgery," Maddow said.
"One way to stab in the heart aggressive American reporting on that subject is to lay traps for American journalists who are reporting on it. Trick news organizations into reporting what appears to be evidence of what happened, and then, after the fact, blow the reporting up."
