FBI agent Peter Strzok was told of a potential hack into Hillary Clinton's email server in 2016 but did not act on the tip, according to a new report.

Fox News reported Strzok, who has made headlines in recent months for exchanging pro-Clinton text messages with another FBI official before the 2016 election, was alerted to an anomaly in the metadata of Clinton's server. Nothing significant to look into the matter was done, according to the report.

"Nothing happened," a source told Fox News.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz knows about the apparent intrusion, Fox noted. Horowitz is working on a report that is probing how the FBI and the Department of Justice conducted the investigation into Clinton's use of a private, home-based email server while she was secretary of state.

In July 2016, then-FBI director James Comey announced he would not recommend charges be brought against Clinton for mishandling classified information. She was running for president at the time but lost to Donald Trump in the election.

Strzok was part of the FBI's Clinton email investigation and played a role in shaping Comey's July 2016 announcement. He was removed from the DOJ's Russia investigation last year after anti-Trump messages between him and an FBI official he was dating surfaced.
