Joe Biden on Verge of Democratic Nomination

Call it Late Super Tuesday.

Voters in seven states and the District of Columbia hled presidential primaries Tuesday that will likely put Joe Biden within reach of formally clinching the Democratic nomination.

The former vice president was just 146 delegates short of the 1,991 he needs for the nomination as of late Tuesday, with Connecticut, Deleware (Biden's home state), and Washington, D.C., results still to come. There were 479 delegates up for grabs Tuesday.

Biden was declared the winner in Indiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island,  Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington.

With high rates of mail-in voting in the primaries so far, it is possible that some results might be delayed. And because Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., remains on the ballot, it is also possible Biden might not win the high percentage of votes cast that he would need to put him over the top. His next chance will be June 9, when Georgia, West Virginia, and U.S. Virgin Island primaries close.

With no active opposition, Biden is already the party's presumed nominee. But the former vice president's haul of delegates from Tuesday's voting pushes him closer to the 1,911 delegates he needs to claim the Democratic presidential nomination.

Voters in several states are participating in primary elections. They coincide with a time of crisis across the country. Voters have had to navigate both health concerns over the coronavirus and protests against racism and police brutality.
