President Donald Trump will host a "listening session" with high school students and teachers this week following the deadly shooting in Florida that left 17 dead and at least 17 injured, The Hill reports.

A White House schedule says the session will take place Wednesday. The president will also meet with state and local officials on school safety on Thursday.

Some students who survived the shooting have blasted the president for his tweets following the incident where he slammed the FBI for missing "many signals" about the alleged gunman because the bureau was "spending too much time trying to prove collusion with the Trump campaign – there is no collusion."

The mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last Wednesday has re-ignited the debate on gun laws, and students are leading the charge. It has also sparked calls for walkouts, sit-ins and other actions on school campuses across the U.S. aimed at pushing lawmakers to pass tougher laws.

"We've sat around too long being inactive in our political climate, and as a result, children have died," Douglas student David Hogg told CNN Saturday. "If our elected officials are not willing to stand up and say, 'I'm not going to continue to take money from the NRA because children are dying,' they shouldn't be in office and they won't be in office because this is a midterm year and this is the change that we need."

The White House did not specify which students or teachers would attend the session, according to the Associated Press.
